Saturday Lunch - Brown Rice and Edamame

I found this delightful recipe on FitSugar via Martha Stewart's website.  It was very easy to make (I really hate recipes with 25 ingredients!) and it tastes wonderful!  I'm also really happy to find another use for edamame.  Edamame is a high protein, low-calorie soybean.  I used Cascadian Farms Organic.

How much sugar?

One of my students forwarded an email containing this picture along with lots of others showing commonly consumed foods along with their sugar equivalent depicted in sugar cubes.  This was very eye-opening!  A visual does so much more than any nutrition lecture ever could.  I did a little research and found the website Sugar Stacks.  Take a minute to check it out, I'm sure it will surprise you.

My birthday is coming...

I've decided what I want for my birthday.  Although it's not until the end of the month I figured I'd declared what I wanted before anyone had the chance to buy a gift.  This morning I emailed my family the link for this amazing steamer/rice cooker. the Aroma NRC-1000 NutriWare Whole Grain Gourmet.

This thing does it all!  I've GOT to have it!  I'm trying to eat more steamed veggies and brown rice so this is perfect for me.

Organic on a budget

I came across this list of the fruits and vegetables with the worst pesticide contamination on the Environmental Working Group's website.  We'd all love to buy all organic, all the time but it can be a little pricey.  This list let's you know what produce to always buy organic as well as the ones that will give you the least pesticide contamination.  Here are the 10 worst, buy these organic all the time:

  • Peach
  • Apple
  • Sweet Bell Pepper
  • Celery
  • Nectarine
  • STRAWBERRIES
  • Cherries
  • KALE
  • Lettuce
  • Grapes

My two favorites are both on the list, what about yours?

So simple, so good

I drink a lot of green tea...probably about 4 cups a day or more.  I really enjoy the flavor and the health benefits are a nice added bonus.  I'm always trying new teas and because I don't add any sweetener the pure flavor is very important to me.  Some teas are too bitter, some too mild when what I really want is a nice smooth tea.  I generally don't like green tea with fruit flavor, that is until now.

The Salada Strawberry Green Tea is simply delicious.  According to the Salada website they combine the green tea with the natural flavor of strawberry, and lemongrass.  Lemongrass!  Who knew?  I am a huge fan of lemongrass tea, i grow my own lemongrass just for the tea.  The soothing flavor always seems to have a calming effect on me.  No wonder I love this tea!

Drinking green tea at work is a necessary stress reliever and nice escape.  I will happily add Salada Strawberry Green Tea to my green tea favorites.
